A coming-of-age tale told in eight parts. Toiling under a hot summer sun in the early Sixties, a group of laborers built an entire community on nothing but mud and swamp. A mottled cast of characters, the crewmen found a connection in their work and a comfort in sharing a drink when the day was done. Among them was the kid, a young man working his way through college by laying bricks over school breaks. What he discovered on Mystic Isle was as valuable as anything he’d learn in the classroom. These are his stories.

Mystic Isle is just an enjoyable read. It grasped my attention from the very beginning. The character development is excellent and really makes the characters feel real. In each story the characters described made me think of people, I know, who share some of the same qualities as the character or that I could meet a person like the character. In this novella like collection of short stories, author John Mahoney teaches readers that they never stop learning even if they have completed all formal education. In each short story Mahoney portrays a character that provides the young narrator with useful life information that can not be picked up in a classroom. He shows readers how the average working man can be one of the greatest teachers. Through these short stories the young narrator also goes through a maturing process in which he discovers the type of person he wants to be through the impact of these average working class mentors. With all this considered this short story collection is an enjoyable read that I highly recommend.M.R.H.

Mystic Isle John J Mahoney 9781494891404 Books Reviews
Candid and compelling, Mahoney is one of the most simplistically profound writers of his class. His anecdotes, masterfully woven together by the threads of family, friends, and coming of age, channel the ideals of Steinbeck's America. "Mystic Isle" succeeds even when- perhaps especially when- it challenges the very way we think.

In Mystic Isle, Mahoney again displays what seems to be his forte Taking a simplistic theme and conveying this theme in a way readers have yet to experience. In today's world where headphones hang like an intravenous from the ears of teens, Mahoney was able to establish a clear message that rose above the conventional coming of age tale Learning can (and will) come from everywhere, if one is willing to learn. Mahoney broke the cookie-cutter coming-of-age mold that is so often seen and was able to capture the intrigue of readers. A backdrop of construction work in the sixties is a daunting challenge for both author and reader alike, but the format of Mystic Isle combined with superb character development made Mystic Isle an enjoyable read indeed.

In Mystic Isle, Dr. John Mahoney brilliantly expresses how the influences of the multitude of experiences one faces and people one encounters in his youth create the man who he will become. Mahoney develops each character of the story and their unique relationship with the protagonist, a young academic who works a construction job over the summer to pay for college, in eight short stories. After reading all eight, a complete picture of the novel, full of rich character development and thought provoking scenarios, is revealed, making Mystic Isle a memorable and enjoyable read for anyone with a passion for literature and and life.
Through Mystic Isle, Dr. Mahoney explores the psychology of learning along with various psychological problems. Using the backdrop of a central character reminiscent of himself, Mahoney discreetly extols learning in a non-classroom setting and presents broad psychological orientations through individuals throughout the segments of short stories that make up the novel. By astutely blending the classic American coming-of-age tale with psychology, Mahoney creates an intelligent, uplifting, and simple story.
Doc Mahoney has done it again! The book provides the reader with great life lessons in just 8 short stories. Great read!
Challenging literary norms, Mahoney develops the narrator of his most recent work through the introduction of a unique, and equally problematic character each chapter, allowing the reader to utilize the narrator's encounters with every character along with there own psychological inferences to create a distinct profile for the kid. Mystic Isle details the cognitive transformation from adolescence to maturity in a relatable grouping of short narratives. -AS
A deep, yet simple approach to the "coming-of-age" novel, Mystic Isle by John J. Mahoney is a fresh addition to the genre. Set in the construction sites of homes along the Jersey Shore during the 1960's, the book peers into a college-bound teen's relationships with his co-construction workers and how he learns from his summer with them.
Ever since I picked this book up last February, I can not stop mirroring myself to the protagonist, and being 16 years old, this book has changed the way I view learning, extracting an important realization out of me— everyone has something to teach. Mystic Isle, appropriate for any student, young or old, is at times satirical, often easy to read, yet always a testament of learning's ubiquity. An exceptional story.
